Kwasi Kwarteng

Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP

Kwasi Kwarteng has been the Conservative Member of Parliament for Spelthorne since 2010.

Kwasi was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 6 September 2022 to 14 October 2022. He was Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) between 2021 and 2022, and was previously Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth in BEIS between 2019 and 2021.

In 2018 Kwasi was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Exiting the European Union, following his time serving as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Leader of the House of Lords.

Born in London in 1975, Kwasi has a BA and PhD in History from Cambridge. Prior to entering Parliament, Kwasi worked as a financial analyst and author. In addition to his political career, Kwasi is also a widely known historian. His first book, Ghosts of Empire, was published in 2011. His second book, War & Gold, was published in 2014, and Thatcher’s Trial was published in 2015.
