Lucy Riall

Lucy Riall is Professor of the History of Europe in the World at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, and a corresponding fellow of the British Academy. Her current research focuses on migrant colonialism, focusing particularly on European colonies of settlement in South America. Her recent publications include 'Offshore Nation: Italians ‘Overseas’ in the Nineteenth-Century World', Storica (83, 2023), and 'Hidden Spaces of Empire: Italian Colonists in Nineteenth-Century Peru', Past and Present, (254, 2022). She is also the author of Under the Volcano: Revolution in a Sicilian Town (Oxford, 2013), and Garibaldi: Invention of a Hero (New Haven and London, 2007), both of which have also been published in Italian.
