Philip Hoare shortlisted for the 2022 PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography
We are very pleased to announce that ALBERT AND THE WHALE: Albrecht Dürer and How Art Imagines Our World by Philip Hoare has been shortlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography 2022.
The award is for excellence in the art of biography with the winning title considered by the judges to be a work of exceptional literary, narrative, and artistic merit, based on scrupulous research.
This year’s judges — Luke Dittrich, Paul Golob, and Imani Perry — commented how Hoare’s book ‘truly resonated with them’.
Other finalists include: The Invention of Miracles: Language, Power, and Alexander Graham Bell’s Quest to End Deafness by Katie Booth (Simon & Schuster), All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days: The True Story of the American Woman at the Heart of the German Resistance to Hitler by Rebecca Donner (Little Brown and Company), The Gambler Wife: A True Story of Love, Risk, and the Woman Who Saved Dostoyevsky by Andrew D. Kaufman (Riverhead Books), and Orwell’s Roses by Rebecca Solnit (Viking).
The winner will be announced at 8 pm (ET) on the 28th February 2022 and honored at the 2022 PEN America Literary Awards Ceremony, hosted by Seth Meyers at The Town Hall in New York City. Tickets for the ceremony are available to buy here.
